Kiryu, Ashikaga, and Mt. Akagi
Our Ashikaga + Mt. Akagi Rindō Adventure expands on our home region of Kiryu and Ashikaga with an added two-night stay at one of our favorite premium ryokan retreats.
Begin your tour at a simple, traditional Japanese ryokan on the outskirts of Ashikaga, riding secluded rindō forest roads and exploring the local countryside. After two nights, transfer to a beautiful ryokan perched on the slopes of Mt. Akagi, where you’ll experience a different flavor of rural Japan—and, for those up to the challenge, take on Mt. Akagi’s famed 100 switchbacks.
This self-guided tour is a great fit for riders who:
- Prefer a mix of standard and premium accommodations
- Want to stay in multiple locations in Gunma
- Want to be in the remote countryside
- Look forward to onsen baths at the end of each ride
This self-guided tour is not a good fit for riders who:
- Prefer western-style accommodations
- Want to be in a more downtown, central city location
- Have strict dietary requirements
Itinerary
Day 1 Overview
Your Rindō Bike Tour Japan support staff will meet you at Ashikagashi Station on the first day of your tour. After introductions, bike fits, and a brief walkthrough of your ryokan, you’ll head out for your first ride. Follow our recommended route for the day or choose your own adventure as you ease into the quiet backroads and natural beauty of this hidden-gem region.
Day 2 Overview
On day 2, dive deeper into the remote countryside on one of our many loop route options. With over 40 routes to choose from, you can tailor each ride to match your energy level and interests without worrying about overlap. Take on a bigger challenge, explore a new area, or simply follow our recommended route and enjoy the ride.
Day 3 Overview
Leave your luggage in the lobby and set out on a scenic transfer ride toward your next accommodation near Mt. Akagi. As you cycle from Ashikaga toward Akagi, you’ll pass by Kiryu — our hometown and one of the best foodie spots in Gunma — making this the perfect opportunity to slow the pace and explore a few of our recommended eats. When you’re ready, continue your journey up the “Red Fortress Mountain,” gradually climbing toward your ryokan perched at its base with sweeping views over the Kanto Plains below.
Day 4 Overview
Today’s adventure depends on how much of a challenge you’re ready to take on, but for riders seeking an intense and rewarding climb, this is the perfect chance to tackle the Akagi Climb. Test your legs on the winding 100 switchbacks of Mt. Akagi’s old backroad, then enjoy a well-earned lakeside lunch by the caldera before descending back to your ryokan.
Day 5 Overview
On your final day, how much you want to ride is up to you. Enjoy a slow morning soaking in your private onsen before leaving your luggage in the lobby and heading out toward Shin-Kiryu Station. If you’d prefer not to ride, simply let us know the day before and our support team will shuttle you directly from the ryokan to the station instead. From there, it’s an easy two-hour express train ride back to Tokyo. Mata-ne!
