Regions
Sano, Ashikaga, Kiryu, and Mt. Akagi
Our Sano + Kiryu + Mt. Akagi Rindō Adventure fully explores our home region of Kiryu and Ashikaga and is most similar in tour flow and landscape to our Valleys and Volcanoes Guided Tour.
Begin at a nostalgic Showa-era ryokan surrounded by rice fields and farmland, and spend your first days exploring quiet country roads and forgotten rindō passes. From there, transfer to a traditional, family-run ryokan tucked into the forests along the Kiryu River, where you can unwind and dive deeper into the secluded forest roads we love. Finally, settle in at a beautiful ryokan perched on the slopes of Mt. Akagi—and, for those up to the challenge, take on the mountain’s famed 100 switchbacks.
This self-guided tour is a great fit for riders who:
- Prefer all premium traditional Japanese accommodations
- Want to stay in multiple locations
- Want to be in the remote countryside
- Look forward to onsen baths at the end of each ride
This self-guided tour is not a good fit for riders who:
- Prefer budget friendly accommodations
- Prefer western-style accommodations
- Want to be in a more downtown, central city location
- Have strict dietary requirements
Itinerary
Day 1 Overview
Your Rindō Bike Tour Japan support staff will meet you at Ashikagashi Station on the first day of your tour. After introductions, bike fits, and a brief walkthrough of your ryokan, head out on your first ride and ease into the quiet backroads of this hidden-gem region. As with all of our self-guided tours, you’ll have a variety of route options each day, allowing you to match your ride to your energy level and interests. Take on a bigger challenge, explore a new area, or simply follow our recommended route and enjoy the views.
Day 2 Overview
On Day 2, set out to explore the surrounding valleys and forest roads of the Sano region on one of several loop options. This area is known for its rural farmland, quiet valleys, and local versions of soba noodles and ramen. Be sure to stop at one of the tiny restaurants along the route (some are true hole-in-the-wall gems!) and enjoy a taste of the countryside.
Day 3 Overview
Leave your luggage in the lobby and start your transfer toward your next accommodation in the quiet forests along the Kiryu River. All of our transfer routes pass close to Kiryu — our hometown and one of the best foodie spots in Gunma — making this the perfect opportunity to slow the pace and explore a few of our recommended local eats along the way. When you’re ready, continue following the river deeper into the forest toward your traditional ryokan retreat.
Day 4 Overview
The low mountains and cedar forests surrounding your ryokan hide some of our favorite secluded rindō roads and passes, making this the perfect day to immerse yourself in nature. Set out on one of several loop options and breathe in the peace and quiet of the Japanese countryside as you ride.
Day 5 Overview
Leave your luggage in the lobby and set out toward your next accommodation near Mt. Akagi. Route options vary depending on your rider level and how much of a challenge you’d like, but all share a similar final climb as they wind their way up the lower base of Mt. Akagi to your beautiful ryokan perched on its slope.
Day 6 Overview
On your final day, how much you want to ride is up to you. Enjoy a slow morning soaking in your private onsen before leaving your luggage in the lobby and heading out toward Shin-Kiryu Station. If you’d prefer not to ride, simply let us know the day before and our support team will shuttle you directly from the ryokan to the station instead. From there, it’s an easy two-hour express train ride back to Tokyo. Mata-ne!
