Unlike many other cities in the region, Kiryu‘s restaurants offer a surprising international scene. Be it traditional Japanese or proper western food, Kiryu restaurants and cafes have something for everyone.

We have listed some of our favorite Kiryu restaurants, all located close to the Watarase River Bike Path. Each place offers good meals at a reasonable price, perfect for before or after a bike tour. Some restaurants are English-friendly as well, so you need not fear any misunderstandings. We have also included which places are vegetarian or vegan friendly. Finally, the bottom of each list has our recommended dishes. With all of this, you are sure to find a Kiryu restaurant to suit your trip.
1203 Cafe & Doughnuts
Conveniently located along the Watarase River Bike Path, 1203 serves western cuisine in a cozy living room setting. One good sandwich is hard to find in Japan, but 1203 has six available. Any of these sandwiches is a good choice alongside fresh doughnuts. So if you fancy western food and good coffee with a unique atmosphere, 1203 is one of your best options.

Okada Ramen
With hearty tonkotsu broth and thin noodles, Okada Ramen serves the best bowl in Kiryu. Because of the noodles’ thin size, the broth is pinched between each noodle, making each bite an explosion of flavor. Centrally located, Okada is a perfect pit stop before or after a bike ride, no matter the season.

Cafe & Dining Bar 9
For the best burger in Kiryu, Bar 9 is the place to go. This menu includes many western staples such as a burger and fries, buffalo chicken wings, or fish n’ chips. Bar 9 is also a fully-fledged bar staffed by an award-winning bartender, so you can unwind and imbibe after your day on the road. You can easily spend a lot of time enjoying the food and drinks at Bar 9.

Purveyors
Of all of Kiryu’s restaurants, Purveyors has the most character. Originally a high-end outdoor equipment shop, in the last year Purveyors has opened a restaurant and in-house craft brewery. The menu has home-style meals from around the world that compliment the store’s rugged log cabin aesthetic, such as corned beef, chicken gapao and cajun gumbo. After that, be sure to go up to the roof for a local draft and an expansive view of Kiryu to cap your visit.

Pizzeria Da Maki
Pizzeria Da Maki is the business of a Japanese born classically trained Italian pizza chef. Pizza is baked in a traditional brick oven and served family style, so your whole group can enjoy together. Even better, the restaurant is right on the Watarase Bike Path, so it is easy to stop by for a mid-ride lunch. With gooey cheese and seriously great crust, Pizzeria Da Maki is your best choice for Italian cuisine in Kiryu, if not all of Japan!

Wabisabiya Gelato
Wabisabiya’s owner was also classically trained in Italy, so you know you will get first-rate gelato. At any time, there are ten flavors available with seasonal flavors, such as strawberry in the spring. Espresso is offered with gelato for those looking for the full Italian dessert experience.

Garment District
Garment District serves curry, pancakes, and more in a modern cafe setting. The curry is particularly great, and you can choose butter chicken, Thai, or keema curry with your rice. After that, ricotta pancakes with maple syrup are a perfect follow-up. Above all others, Garment District’s take on Japanese curry will never do you wrong.

Okiya Guest House
Okiya Guest House is both an authentic Spanish tapas restaurant and high-end guest house right in the heart of Kiryu. A rarity for small town Japan, Okiya focuses on traditional Spanish favorites like smoked chorizo and paella. Eat good food while you chat with the owners about your travels. And if you happen to get a little sleepy, there are beds available upstairs!

Tatsu Kichi Restaurant
If you are looking for traditional Japanese bento, Tatsu Kichi will give you many options. Tatsu Kichi offers several different fish and chicken bowls, but eel is the most popular option. A delicacy in Japan, eel is artfully grilled and glazed before served over rice. Above all other Kiryu restaurants, Tatsu Kichi has Kiryu’s best traditional Japanese food.

Shitamiya Katsudon Restaurant
Shitamiya Katsudon specializes in a traditional Japanese cuisine known as Katsudon. Their katsudon is made of top cuts of deep fried pork belly served over rice with up to 8 pieces. More than any other katsudon place in town, and served with pickled vegetable, salad, and miso soup. Shitamiya’s katsudon is always a good meal, especially after a long bike ride.

Bonus Cafe – Norry’s Coffee
Right across from JR Kiryu Station, Norry’s Coffee has some of the best coffee in Kiryu. While small, the coffee is roasted, ground, and brewd on-site. In addition, Norry learned to make coffee in Australia, so he can tell you about his coffee in English. Stop in before or after your train to get some of the best coffee Kiryu has to offer!
