I was hesitant to travel with all that’s going on in the world but was instantly reassured when I saw BTJ’s preparations, following safety guidelines and making sure things are done right.

Safety first approach

Worry-free travel

In addition to Bike Tour Japan’s safety & cleanliness standards, our team has added new protocol to meet the guidelines from CDC and WHO. Every piece of gear that is touched: bikes/handlebars, SAG vehicle, etc will be fully wiped down with disinfectant each day.

Bike Tour Japan’s support vehicle will have a full supply of masks and sanitizer for guests to use throughout the tour.

Clean, high-quality hotels and restaurants

While we have always had a high standard for our hotel and restaurant partners, given the current pandemic, we are re-confirming new safety protocols with all of our partners.

Each one of our restaurant and hotel partners follow guidelines that are in line with the global, national, and local requirements for COVID-19 safety.

We choose to work with hotel partners that optimize safety, quality, and experience for our guests. This includes daily sanitation of all surfaces, appropriate face coverings for all staff, and consistent hand-washing.

Social distancing using technology

With our Garmin GPS installed bikes you can follow the route while enjoying cycling on your own terms.

You can also share your GPS dot with your support team, so you can ride freely with full reassurance that your BTJ team knows where you are, should you require SAG assistance.

They turned my first time in Japan to an unforgettable experience of a lifetime. From the food, riding, and support, BTJ is a great company to assist with your needs. I vow to return for one of the scheduled Tours!

Travel with BTJ guides for an unforgettable experience

BTJ’s Expert Guides have in-depth local knowledge, allowing for maximum flexibility when it comes to avoiding crowds and offering cultural activities that are safe and responsible.

Guides will help guests navigate all aspects of Japanese culture.

I’ve been on many great cycling vacations, but my experience with BTJ was easily the best of all of them. The routes were extraordinary; each and every day felt as picturesque as a National Geographic documentary.

Quick answers to frequent questions

We will review and confirm each trip 30 days prior to departure to determine if it is safe to run the tour. If your trip is postponed, we will transfer 100% of your trip funds to travel credit, which can be applied to any future guided or self-guided tour.

Our goal is to provide flexibility so that you can have the time and information you need to make the best decision. If you wish to postpone your fall 2020 or spring 2021 tour, you can transfer your trip funds to travel credit. This travel credit is non-refundable and can be applied to any future guided or self-guided tour. This decision must be made more than 30 days before your tour’s start date.

We love riding our bikes, and think that a great holiday means not needing to be shuttled around in a van, bus, or train. So, from the moment you start your tour, you can stay on bikes and enjoy the fresh outdoors. All of our routes are carefully designed to take you from start to finish on safe and enjoyable roads for bicycles. While guests always have the option to get a lift in Bike Tour Japan’s support and gear vehicle on a guided tour, it is never required.

*The one exception to this is the Tour of the Setouchi Sea where we take a handful of ferries throughout the trip. Each ferry has both indoor and outdoor covered seating and standing room with plenty of space to stay socially distant.

Each of our pre-scheduled guided and self-guided tours launches from and ends at a train station with quick connections to major hubs. That said, there are many options to arriving and departing our tours. If you want to take public transit we will provide the information on best options, but also can provide shuttle services for an additional fee when requested. Most tours start and end within 1-3hrs from Tokyo or Hiroshima and their airports by car.

We provide private shuttle for bespoke private trips to your start location unless otherwise planned.

All of our tours include high-quality hybrid or road bicycles at no extra fee. We use the 2019 Cannodale Quick for our hybrid option and the 2019 Cannondale Synapse for our road option.

If you would like an e-bike, please let us know at time of booking, as our fleet is limited. There is an extra fee to reserve an e-bike.

For more details and full specs on our bike fleet, please check out this page: https://biketourjapan.com/bikeoptions

Your BTJ guides are always happy to help with dietary requirements and food restrictions while on tour. We can accommodate most food allergies and dietary preferences, but dashi (fish broth) is extremely difficult to avoid in Japan, as it is used in cooking many main dishes. We recommend a self-guided or private tour if you are unable to consume fish broth.

Yes – we do work with organizations to plan tours through the Japanese countryside! Please let us know exactly what you are looking for in terms of route and off-bike activities, and we will do our best to build your business an excellent adventure. Keep in mind that for groups of 15+ we typically stay in large ryokans and hotels. This is because most traditional ryokans have fewer than 10 rooms.

Rest assured that Bike Tour Japan staff have vetted each restaurant and hotel to make sure they adhere to updated requirements. This includes daily sanitation of all surfaces, appropriate face coverings for all staff, and consistent hand-washing.

All guests are required to wear masks in any area where there is a moderate level of foot traffic. This includes flower parks, museums, temples, shops, etc. These activities are always optional. While BTJ will have plenty of masks, we also encourage you to bring your own face coverings (buffs, bandanas, masks) and hand sanitizer.

Our passion has always been to share the complexities of Japan that aren’t featured on blogs or TV. We opt for off-the-beaten-path towns and hidden gems rather than hectic city crowds and top-10 tourist stops.
